De eerste graffiti als interventie in de openbare ruimte realiseerde Luc Deleu in samenwerking met Ria Pacquée klandestien op de gevel van het fonkelnieuwe M HKA in de jaren tachtig: ‘Met dank aan de generale bank’. Pas jaren later werd deze graffiti op Deleu’s solotentoonstelling in het M HKA als werk openbaar gemaakt.

In 2008 bracht Luc Deleu de eerste keer de slogan ‘LESS IS LESS’ aan op de muren van de tentoonstellingsruimte in de Biënnale van Brussel. De slogan werd geproduceerd in kapitalen, met stencil letters en spuitverf. Veel ruwer en directer is de graffiti in rode spuitverf op de ramen van Stroom Den Haag in 2013. In het kader van zijn tentoonstelling ‘Orban Space’ vormde de graffiti ‘less is less’ de baseline van het gehele tentoonstellingsproject. (Deze tentoonstelling is momenteel te zien bij Extra City Antwerpen.)

Luc Deleu (°1944) richtte in 1970 zijn architectenbureau T.O.P. office op. Hij zoekt door ‘niet bouwen’ het debat rond architectuur en ruimtelijke planning op en onderzoekt als architect en stedenbouwkundige een mogelijke bijdrage om minder te produceren, minder te bouwen, minder te vervuilen, minder te consumeren, de planeet aarde minder te exploiteren. Vroege werken zoals bijvoorbeeld ‘De laatste steen van België’ uit 1979, een oproep tot bouwstop, verwijzen vrij letterlijk naar zijn radicale houding als architect. ‘less is less’ relateert dan ook – niet zonder humoristische verwijzing naar de historische uitspraak van Mies van der Rohe ‘Less is More’ – naar de kwintessens van Deleu’s antwoord als architect op overbevolking, grondschaarste en milieuvervuiling.

De editie ‘less is less’ geeft de eigenaar de toestemming om zelf op een plaats naar keuze de graffiti ‘less is less’ te realiseren als werk van Luc Deleu / T.O.P. office.

Deze editie werd voorgesteld in de nieuwe HEIMAT projectruimte in Antwerpen op 18 oktober 2013, waar Deleu de slogan op het raam heeft aangebracht. LLS 387 stelde deze editie voor tijdens haar evenement TE KOOP tussen 6 en 24 december 2013.

Luc Deleu carried out his first graffiti – ‘Met dank aan de generale bank’ (Thank you, Generale Bank) – as an intervention in the public space in the 1980s, together with Ria Pacquée, spraying clandestinely on the façade of Antwerp’s brand new museum for contemporary art M HKA. Only years later, at Deleu’s solo exhibition in the same museum, was this graffiti made public as a work.

In 2008, Luc Deleu applied the slogan ‘LESS IS LESS’ for the first time, spraying it on the walls of the exhibition space in the Brussels Biennial. He used block capitals and produced the slogan with stencil letters and spray paint. The red graffiti spray-painted on the windows of Stroom in The Hague in 2013 is rougher and more direct. Part of his ‘Orban Space’ exhibition, it formed the baseline for the entire exhibition project. (‘Orban Space’ can currently be seen at Extra City, Antwerp.)

Luc Deleu (b. 1944) set up his architectural office, T.O.P. office, in 1970. Right from the start he questioned architecture and urban design by ‘not building’ and – as an architect and urban planner – he explored potential contributions to producing less, building less, polluting less, consuming less, generally exploiting the planet less. Early works such as The last Stone of Belgium from 1979, a call to stop building, refer quite literally to his radical stance as an architect: ‘less is less’ therefore relates – not without a humorous allusion to Mies van der Rohe’s famous minimalist architectural dictum ‘Less is More’ – to the quintessence of Deleu’s response as an architect to overpopulation, land scarcity and environmental pollution.

The ‘less is less’ edition allows the owner to graffiti ‘less is less’, in a place of his or her choosing, as a work by Luc Deleu / T.O.P. office.

This edition was be presented in the new HEIMAT project space in Antwerp, where Deleu has graffitied the slogan onto the window, on 18 October 2013. LLS 387 presented this edition during the TE KOOP event between 6 and 24 December 2013.
