In zijn video-installaties tast Wim Catrysse sinds het einde van de jaren 1990 de grenzen af van visuele constructies en vertrekt daarvoor van architecturale structuren of van de topografische kenmerken van een locatie. Hij vertaalt dit onderzoek in cinematografische werken, waarin het tonen en peilen van elementaire krachten een centrale rol spelen. Dit resulteert in beelden die ons uit onze comfortzone trekken, waarvan een fysiek dreigement uitgaat, beelden die iets unheimlich hebben en de vanzelfsprekendheid van onze alledaagse perceptie bevraagt. Catrysse’s specifiek artistieke methode verbindt daarbij twee schijnbaar onverenigbare uitersten: impulsiviteit, fysieke directheid, intuïtie en experiment – bijna niets is vooraf in alle lijnen uitgezet – en aan de andere kant een scherpe artistiek technische beredenering, die soms kan leiden tot complexe cinematografische beeldconstructies.

Door het opzoeken en ondergaan van extreme omstandigheden, kunstmatig geënsceneerd of inherent verbonden met de topografische kenmerken van een site, wordt de kunstenaar, alsook zijn apparatuur, geregeld bloot gesteld aan “geweld”. In die zin representeert de video still Guarding Hands, AK de werkmethode eigen aan Catrysse: tijdens de opnames van een ‘zandstorm’ tracht Catrysse, wanneer de wind zich plots naar hem toekeert, de lens van zijn camera te beschermen. Dit videobeeld werd vastgelegd tijdens de opnames van Backdrop, in Alaska in 2006, maar werd uiteindelijk in het videowerk zelf niet gebruikt.

De publicatie Restricted Area presenteert niet alleen Wim Catrysses werk vanuit verschillende standpunten en op verschillende momenten binnen zijn artistiek parcours, maar geeft ook een inzicht in de ontstaansgeschiedenis van elk werk om het vraagstuk van zijn dwingende verschijningsvorm ten dele te kunnen doorgronden.

Editie en publicatie worden voorgesteld op 24 januari 2014, op de opening van de tentoonstelling Restricted Area van Wim Catrysse in het Cultureel Centrum en De Garage te Mechelen (opening: vrijdag 24 januari, 20 uur; t/m 6 april 2014).

Ever since the late 1990s Catrysse has been surveying the confines of visual constructions in his video installations, taking an architectural structure or the topographical features of a site as his starting point. He translates this investigation into cinematographic works in which the exposing and balancing of elementary forces play an essential role.

The result is an accumulation of images that jerk us out of our comfort zone, that convey a physical threat, images that have about them something unheimlich and often unseat the obviousness of our most common perceptions. Moreover, Catrysse’s particular artistic method combines two apparently irreconcilable extremes: impulsiveness, physical directness, intuition and experimentation (almost nothing is worked out in detail beforehand) on the one hand and on the other an acute artistic and technical reasoning that can sometime lead to complex cinematographic image constructions.

By searching out and experiencing extreme conditions, artificially staged or inherent in the topographical characteristics of a site, both the artist and his equipment are often exposed to hostility. In that sense the video still Guarding Hands, AK represents the working method particular to Catrysse: while filming a ‘sandstorm’ he tries to protect his camera lens when the wind suddenly turns against him. This video image was taken during the filming of Backdrop in Alaska in 2006 but was not used in the final cut.

The publication Restricted Area not only presents the substance of Wim Catrysse’s work from different viewpoints and at different moments in his artistic passage but also provides an insight into how each work was made in order to go some way towards deciphering his compelling apparitions.

Both edition and publication will be presented on 24 January 2014 at the opening of Wim Catrysse’s exhibition Restricted Area in the Cultureel Centrum and De Garage in Mechelen (opening: 24th of Januari, 8 p.m.; till 6th of April 2014).
