Affiniteiten#2 is the second installment of the annual exhibition project on artist couples who live but do not work together. In this series, LLS Paleis wants to view Belgian art through the prism of the love tandem by researching and showing artistic resonances. The exhibition aims to answer questions such as: In which works do the artists most explicitly experience the artistic encounter between them? To what extent does an underlying, shared spirit exist? Which work of the other did they first see? Do they have anything in common in terms of form or content? Are they always the first viewers of each other’s work?

In this second installment, we show work by the Brussels-based artists Lucia Bru (b. 1970) and her partner, Spanish-born Angel Vergara (b. 1959) and by the Antwerp-based Venezuelan Carla Arocha (b. 1961) and her husband Luc Tuymans (b. 1958). Moreover, we show two recent works by Arocha that she made with her artistic partner Stéphane Schraenen, with whom she works but does not live together. A constellation of old and newer works is shown, in which the many-sidedness of influence is reflected and nobody dictates a theme, in which screens, as reflections or carriers, unasked-for and unexpected but generous and confident, are prepared to become unconditionally, inescapably one with the other. A love reveals itself, escapes the frame. Imagination and intimation are the core of desire, perceptible and imperceptible bodies revealing space and shaping time.

They are tempting each other.

In the blue-leather sky, the sparkling stars of a birthplace, the memory of those who are no longer with us, skin as heaven, the envelope closed forever. [1, 2] The heap of porcelain whiteness winks at the body under the sheet. [3, 4] A phallic rover the first touch, abstraction as opening line and surrender. [5] A deep-grey bed, together more than two, magic reflections connected to a screen. [6, 7] Gaze, mind and body engaged. Up on the ceiling suggestion, a simulation of what can be recognized. [8] Wallpaper with gas mask, lovingly but obliquely removed from the house, traces of touch proven white-on-black. [9, 10, 11] There’s a fragile echo around the corner. [12] Her muscled back a dream image. [13] You see yourself. The idol: to look is to admire. [14] Vanity, an elegant sparkle. The foreplay of the act, projection. [15] Stream of consciousness, the unfiltered as a homage. [16, 17] Out of the frame you finish the traces of the gesture yourself. [18] The light in the tiles the last space to walk around in. [19] Then: an encounter without a shadow, or else: the close-up of something that seems familiar. [20, 21] A utopia. Symbolic passageways in lines and curves, delicate. [22] The jacket stays off, handled over. [23] The silver screen a mirror, the pool heaven anew. [24, 25] In the dark of the room, the image sought again. [26] The light seen again.
