De tentoonstelling met de titel ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’ presenteert vier werken op groot formaat en twee tekeningenseries van Elly Strik.
Elly Strik (°1961, Nederland) heeft gestudeerd in Groningen en Maastricht en leeft en werkt sinds 1996 in Brussel. Haar werk is opgenomen in private en publieke collecties in binnen- en buitenland. Ze stelde tentoon in Frankrijk, Duitsland, Zwitserland en Nederland, bv. in De Pont, Tilburg (2006) en het MUHKA, Antwerpen (1999). Sinds deze omvangrijke tentoonstelling heeft ze in België geen solo-tentoonstelling meer gehad.
LLS 387 wil met deze presentatie haar werk in België wederom onder de aandacht brengen, omdat ze ongetwijfeld tot die schilders/tekenaars behoort die een coherent en consequent oeuvre ontwikkelden dat alsmaar intenser wordt. Een oeuvre, dat binnen het hedendaags kunstlandschap een eigenzinnige positie inneemt.
Haar werk getuigt van een diepgaande zoektocht naar de essentie van de menselijke conditie; naar dat wat ons mens maakt. Haar werken zijn vervaardigd met olieverf, lakverf en grafiet. Papier dient als drager voor haar beelden. Ze schildert met potlood en tekent met verf. Het resultaat zijn beelden die het wezen van het tekenen zelf blootleggen, zoals Hans Theys in het boek ‘Oracle’ beschrijft. De blik naar buiten en de blik naar binnen vallen samen. Stormachtig en ontsluierend toont Elly Strik de plek waar we ons bevinden, de ruïnes van ons bestaan. Ze tracht het ondoorgrondelijke te doorgronden; beschrijft niet alleen figuurlijk, maar ook letterlijk een innerlijke conditie in ons gezicht. De tekening van de mens als litteken van de mens.
De serie van acht tekeningen ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’ geeft aan de tentoonstelling haar titel. Jean-Christophe Ammann schrijft hierover: “Aan de ene kant verwijst de titel naar Duchamps ‘Grand Verre’ (‘The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, even’); aan de andere kant markeert de titel ook een centraal thema in het werk van Elly Strik: elke kunstenaar is zijn eigen bruid en elke kunstenares haar eigen bruidegom. Hier wordt gedoeld op de bipolariteit van de geslachten die elke kunstenaar als creatieve motor en als een vorm van bewustzijn in zich verenigt.” Het werk creëert zichzelf.
Naar aanleiding van de solo tentoonstelling van Elly Strik in de Drawing Centre Diepenheim eind 2009 is het boek met de titel ‘Oracle’ verschenen. Eveneens werd in het voorjaar het boek ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’ gepubliceerd. Beide boeken werden uitgegeven door Tornado Editions en zijn te verkrijgen in LLS 387.

The exhibition The Bride Fertilized by Herself presents four large-scale works and two series of drawings by Elly Strik. Elly Strik (b. 1961, the Netherlands) studied in Groningen and Maastricht. Since 1996 she has lived and worked in Brussels. Her work is included in private and public collections here in Belgium and beyond. She has exhibited in France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, for instance in the Museum De Pont in Tilburg (2006), and also in the Museum of Contemporary Art (MUHKA) in Antwerp (1999). Since the latter, major exhibition she has not had a solo show in Belgium.
In presenting ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’, LLS 387 aims to focus attention on her work once again in Belgium, for there is no doubt that Strik is one of those artists who have developed a coherent and consistent oeuvre that only grows in intensity. An oeuvre that occupies a wilful place in the contemporary artistic landscape.
Strik’s work evidences a profound quest for the essence of the human condition, for what makes us human beings. She creates her works with oils, lacquer and graphite, using paper as the support for her images. She paints in pencil and draws in paint. The result is images that lay bare the essence of drawing itself, as Hans Theys puts it in ‘Oracle’, a recent book on Strik’s work. Outward and inward looks coincide. Tempestuously, revealingly, Elly Strik shows us the place where we find ourselves, the ruins of our existence. She endeavours to penetrate the impenetrable, describing both figuratively and literally an inner condition in our face. The drawing of man as the scar of man.
Her series of eight drawings collectively called ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’ gives the present exhibition its title. Jean-Christophe Ammann writes of it, “On the one hand the title refers to Duchamp’s ‘Grand Verre’ (also known as ‘The Bride stripped bare by her Bachelors, even’), on the other it signals a core theme in Strik’s work: every artist is his own bride, every artist her own groom. The focus here is on gender bipolarity, something all artists unite within themselves as a creative motor and a form of consciousness.” The work creates itself.
A solo exhibition by Elly Strik was running at the Drawing Centre Diepenheim end of 2009 and was also the occasion for the publication of Oracle. The book ‘The Bride Fertilized by Herself’ appeared earlier in the year. Both are published by Tornado Editions and are available at LLS 387.
