LLS 387 ruimte voor actuele kunst presenteerde een solotentoonstelling van veelzijdig kunstenaar Floris Vanhoof (°1982). Zijn vernuftige installaties en performances tonen een hybride wereld van muziek, fotografie en film waarbij de kruisbestuiving tussen het visuele en het auditieve centraal staat. Met zijn zelf gefabriceerde modulaire muzikale instrumenten, omgebouwde film- en diaprojectoren doet Vanhoof de toeschouwer op een andere manier kijken. Niet enkel zijn eigenzinnige reanimatie van gedateerde audiovisuele technieken en instrumenten maar ook titels als Dinosaurs en My Family’s Fossil Collection maken van Vanhoof een ware media-archeoloog.

Voor Dinosaurs belichtte de kunstenaar View Master schijfjes van dinosauriërs rechtstreeks op een 16mm filmstrook. De paleontologische vondsten uit My Family’s Fossil Collection – die voor deze tentoonstelling opnieuw bovengehaald worden – pogen de fossielen die al honderden miljoenen jaren stil liggen, terug tot leven te brengen.
Met gemanipuleerde lichtprojecties, flikkerende beelden, simultane projecties, slingerende en roterende dia-installaties en speelse geluiden confronteert hij de digitaal verwende toeschouwer met diens conventies en intuïties. Zijn oeuvre vormt een zoektocht naar alternatieve manieren om beeld weer te geven: hij wijkt af van de geijkte 24 beelden per seconde om nieuwe beeldritmes en kijkprocessen uit te lokken.

LLS 387 ruimte voor actuele kunst presented a solo exhibition of the work of Floris Vanhoof (b. 1982). The ingenious installations and performances of this protean artist offer a hybrid world of music, photography and film at whose core is the cross-fertilization of the visual and the sonic. Using self-made modular musical instruments and re-engineered film and slide projectors, Vanhoof causes us to rethink our way of looking. His idiosyncratic resurrection of outmoded audiovisual techniques and instruments coupled with titles such as Dinosaurs and My Family’s Fossil Collection cloaks him in the persona of media-archaeologist.

For Dinosaurs he exposed View Master dinosaur discs directly onto a 16mm film strip. The paleontological finds from My Family’s Fossil Collection – which has been unearthed again for this exhibition – try to reanimate fossils that have existed for aeons in lightless immobility.
With manipulated light projections, flickering images, simultaneous projections, swaying and rotating slide installations and playful sounds he confronts the digitally-cosseted viewer with his conventions and intuitions. His oeuvre is a search for alternative ways of reproducing the image: he departs from the customary twenty-four frames per second in order to evoke new visual rhythms and observational processes.
