Zoals het boek ‘Color Walks’, gepubliceerd door de Cera-holding in 2008, is de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in LLS 387 het resultaat van een drie jaar durend artistiek onderzoek door de Belgische kunstenares Ria Pacquée (°1954). Ze heeft voor de tentoonstelling in LLS 387 vijf nog niet eerder getoonde video-films, twee diareeksen, een aantal foto’s en objecten voor het eerst in één installatie samengebracht.
Ria Pacquée is in de jaren tachtig internationaal doorgebroken met haar performance-reeksen met de door haar gecreëerde personages ‘Madame’ en de ‘It – figuur’. Meer recente fotowerken en videoproducties hebben opnieuw de aandacht kunnen trekken van een jonge generatie kunstenaars en curatoren; zo heeft ze deelgenomen aan de Manifesta 7 in 2008 en voltooide ze onlangs een artistiek opdracht van het gerenommeerde Londense kunstinstituut Camden Arts Centre. Ze is dit jaar ook laureaat van de ‘prix Fondation ML Jacques’.
Ria Pacquée’s werkterrein is de straat. Ze ziet de straat als levend decor waarin ze zich discreet beweegt (‘streetrambling’) en het gebeuren vanuit een bepaalde invalshoek via foto- of videocamera kan registreren. De straat is haar inspiratiebron, haar muze en haar sterkste criticus. Deze wandelingen gebeuren in steden als Dehli, Varanasi, Jeruzalem, Sanaa, Istanbul, haar geboortestad Antwerpen, Parijs, Brussel, Aalst en Oostende – steden die zowel de Oosterse alsook de Westerse cultuur in hun dagelijks beeld weerspiegelen.
In het project, ‘Color Walks’, heeft Ria Pacquée haar tochten laten leiden door kleur: kleur als poëtische uitdrukkingskracht voor het leven en de dood en de daarmee verbonden culturele en religieuze connotaties, maar ook – het zou anders niet van de hand van Ria Pacquée kunnen zijn – kleur als uitdrukkingsvorm van een sociaal maatschappelijke conditie: “If you want to find a job, you have to de-color.”

Like the book Color Walks, published by Cera Holding in 2008, the exhibition of the same title in LLS 387 is the result of a three-year artistic exploration by the Belgian artist Ria Pacquée (b. 1954). Here she has brought together for the first time, in one installation five previously unseen video films, two series of slides and a number of photographs and objects.
Pacquée’s international breakthrough came in the nineteen-eighties with her performance series featuring the characters she created – ‘Madame’ and ‘It’. More recently, photographic works and video productions have once again drawn the attention of a young generation of artists and curators: she took part in Manifesta 7 in 2008, for instance, and has recently completed an artist’s project for the renowned Camden Arts Centre, in London. This year she is also a recipient of the ‘prix Fondation ML Jacques’.
Pacquée’s terrain is the street. She sees the street as a living setting in which she moves discreetly (‘street rambling’), recording events from a particular viewpoint with a hand-held camera or video. The street is her wellspring, her muse and her sternest critic. She takes these walks in cities such as Delhi, Varanasi, Jerusalem, Sana’a, Istanbul, Antwerp (her home town), Paris, Brussels, Aalst and Ostend – cities whose everyday image reflects both Eastern and Western culture.
In the Color Walks project Pacquée’s wandering has been led by color, color as an evocative poetic expression of life and death and the cultural and religious connotations associated with them, and also – otherwise it could not be by Pacquée – color as a vehicle of a social condition: ‘If you want to find a job, you have to de-color.’
