Ingeborg Lüscher wordt in 1936 in Freiberg (Sachsen, Duitsland) als Ingeborg Löffler geboren. Ze volgt een acteeropleiding in (West-)Berlijn en werkt in de daaropvolgende jaren als theater- en filmactrice. In 1959 trouwt ze met de Zwitserse kleurenpsycholoog Max Lüscher, van wie ze in 1967 scheidt. Sindsdien woont ze in Tegna, een dorp nabij Locarno in het Zwitserse kanton Ticino. In de beeldende kunst is ze autodidact.
In 1969 ontdekt ze de kluizenaar en visionair Armand Schulthess, die in zijn woud een encyclopedie in openlucht opgericht heeft. Zij documenteert zijn werk en wordt hiermee door Harald Szeeman in 1972 uitgenodigd op documenta 5, wat tevens het begin betekent van hun levenslange relatie.
Haar oeuvre omvat tal van expressievormen zoals schilderen, fotografie, beeldhouwen, installaties, video’s, literatuur, … Het gaat over thema’s als geboorte en dood, de ervaring van licht en duisternis, maar ook over politieke kwesties.
De reeks Zaubererfotos / Magician Photos, waaraan deze tentoonstelling gewijd is, loopt al sinds 1976 als een rode draad door haar oeuvre. De reeks startte toevallig. Als spel. Lüscher werd gevraagd om voor een magazine over het thema een essay te schrijven, maar in plaats van te schrijven, liet ze zich fotograferen bij het toveren.
Wat de foto’s allemaal over haar toonden verraste haar in die mate, dat ze wilde weten in hoeverre dat ook bij anderen zo zou zijn. Dat was in 1976, en tot de dag van vandaag zijn 522 mensen op de uitnodiging: “Please do magic, whatever that may mean for you right now.” ingegaan. In het begin waren het vrienden en familieleden, later verruimde de kring zich opvallend en nam ook het aantal kunstenaars toe. Bijna de gehele opkomende generatie kunstenaars die actief waren van begin tot einde jaren ’80 komen in de Zaubererfotos voor. Dit zijn in de brede betekenis van het woord haar generatiegenoten.
De fotoreeks omvat meer dan het portret van de gefotografeerde alleen: we zien hoe de kunstwereld zich door de tijd ontwikkelt van een “man-georiënteerde” westerse aangelegenheid naar een scène waar ook vrouwen en kunstenaars met diverse achtergronden ernstig genomen worden. Deze verschuiving zien we in de 2de helft van de jaren ’90. In 1997 neemt Lüscher deel aan de Biënnale van Lyon. Tal van collega’s verschijnen voor haar lens, in het bijzonder (jonge) vrouwen die op de Biënnale exposeren zoals ook verscheidene kunstenaars uit China. Twee jaar later, in 1999, wordt de Biënnale van Venetië de locatie voor tal van Zaubererfotos. In deze zin heeft de fotoreeks een autobiografische basis: bij vele werken staan de locaties en jaartallen van de opnames geregistreerd. Een opvallend jongere generatie is aan het woord in 2004. Na 2008 neemt de frequentie van de reeks af.
De meeste foto’s echter ontstonden in de prachtige tuin te Tegna, waar de kunstenaar sinds 1967 woont en werkt. Vele vrienden en kennissen die daar op bezoek kwamen, kozen namelijk voor opnames in de tuin. Want ook de plaats waar de magie zal uitgevoerd worden, bepaalt die persoon zelf.
Lüscher formuleert haar verzoek en gaat niet in discussie. Zij vormen een duo, de één wachtend, de ander in een situatie van opperste spanning, alleen, enkel op zichzelf teruggeworpen.
En dat is waar het echte wonder begint, de magie. Er zijn geen ingestudeerde glimlachen meer, geen modellen. Wat hier zichtbaar wordt, illustreert wat Beuys “ieder mens is een kunstenaar” noemde. Voor elk van de 18 foto’s die Lüscher maakt, bevinden beiden zich in een gemeenschap van de grootst mogelijke nabijheid, het klikken van de camera, het aanvoelen van wat de ander bezighoudt, een stille dialoog met elkaar.
Van de 18 foto’s selecteert Lüscher er 9 voor haar serie.
Hoewel grote delen van dit omvangrijke oeuvre reeds werd geëxposeerd in verschillende Europese musea, waren de Zaubererfotosnooit eerder te zien in België. Lichtekooi Artspace en LLS Paleis zijn dan ook verheugd om ze voor het eerst hier tentoon te stellen.
De tentoonstelling is een hommage aan de fantasie en de creativiteit van de mens. Ingeborg Lüscher maakt die via deze unieke vorm van portretfotografie op een bijzondere wijze zichtbaar.

Ingeborg Lüscher was born as Ingeborg Löffler in 1936 in Freiberg (Saxony, Germany). She studied acting in West Berlin and worked in the following years as an actress in the theater and films. In 1959 she married the Swiss color psychologist Max Lüscher, whom she was divorced from in 1967. Since then, she has lived in Tegna, a village near Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino. She is an autodidact in visual art.
In 1969 she discovered the hermit and visionary Armand Schulthess, who had set up an open-air encyclopedia in his forest. She documented his work, and in 1972 she was invited by Harald Szeemann to exhibit at documenta 5, which was also the beginning of their lifelong relationship.
Her oeuvre includes many forms of expression such as painting, photography, sculpture, installations, videos, and literature. It deals with themes such as birth and death, the experience of light and darkness, and also political issues.
The series Zaubererfotos / Magician Photos, to which this exhibition is devoted, has been a thread running through her oeuvre since 1976. The series started by chance. As a game. Lüscher was asked to write an essay for a magazine on the subject, but instead of writing she had herself photographed while performing magic.
What the photos showed about her surprised her so much that she wanted to know to what extent this would also be the case with others. That was in 1976, and to this day 522 people have accepted the invitation, “Please do magic, whatever that may mean for you right now.” In the beginning they were friends and relatives, later the circle expanded noticeably and the number of artists also increased. Almost the entire emerging generation of artists who were active from the beginning to the end of the 1980s are featured in the Magician Photos. In the broad sense of the word, these are her contemporaries.
The photo series includes more than just the portrait of the photographed person: we see how the art world develops over time from a “man-oriented” Western affair to a scene where women and artists from various backgrounds are also taken seriously. We see this shift in the second half of the 1990s. In 1997 Lüscher took part in the Lyon Biennale. Numerous colleagues appear in front of her lens, in particular (young) women who exhibited at the Biennale as well as several artists from China. Two years later, in 1999, the Venice Biennale becomes the venue for numerous Magician Photos. In this sense, the photo series has an autobiographical foundation: the locations and dates of the shoot are recorded in many works. A remarkably younger generation is featured in 2004. After 2008, the frequency of the series decreases.
Most of the photos, however, were created in the beautiful garden in Tegna, where the artist has lived and worked since 1967. Many friends and acquaintances who came to visit there chose to shoot in the garden. Because the place where the magic will be performed is also decided by that person themself.
Lüscher formulates her request and does not enter into a discussion. They form a duo, one waiting, the other in a situation of supreme tension, alone, thrown back only on themself.
And that is where the real wonder begins, the magic. There are no more rehearsed smiles, no modelling. What becomes visible here illustrates Beuys’s statement that “every person is an artist.” For each of the 18 photos Lüscher takes, the artist and the subject are in a community of the greatest possible proximity, the clicking of the camera, the sense of what the other is doing, a silent dialogue with one another.
Of the 18 photos, Lüscher selects 9 for her series.
Although large parts of this extensive oeuvre have already been exhibited in various European museums, the Magician Photoshave never been seen in Belgium before. Lichtekooi Artspace and LLS Paleis are therefore delighted to exhibit them here for the first time.
The exhibition is an homage to the imagination and creativity of human beings. Ingeborg Lüscher makes this visible in a unique way through this special form of portrait photography.
