A pair is not a collection

Vaast Colson, Anne Daems, Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Kurt Ryslavy, Rinus Van de Velde en Henk Visch presenteren hun kunstcollectie

Omdat de verzamelcultuur van hedendaagse kunst in België een rijke traditie kent, bieden verschillende kunstorganisaties hier te lande regelmatig een podium voor privéverzamelingen. Daarbij worden onder meer de volgende vragen belicht: Welke motivatie hebben verzamelaars om bepaalde stukken in hun collectie op te nemen? Welke richtlijnen volgen ze bij het aanschaffen van kunst? Zijn er überhaupt richtlijnen of gaan ze spontaner te werk dan de buitenwereld vermoedt? Is het de bedoeling om de privécollectie tijdelijk of permanent publiek toegankelijk te maken? Hoe verhoudt de privécollectie zich ten opzichte van de kunstmarkt en van publieke collecties?
Het verzamelen van kunst is echter ook een bezigheid van kunstenaars zelf. Hun manier van verzamelen kan verschillende vormen aannemen: ruilen of kopen ze; verzamelen ze werk dat veraf of juist dicht bij hun eigen kunst staat, doen ze dat strategisch of spontaan? En hoe verhoudt hun kunstcollectie zich tot het eigen oeuvre? Kan deze verhouding ons iets vertellen over een kunstenaarschap? Zes kunstenaars werden uitgenodigd om hun eigen collectie te presenteren in LLS 387 ruimte voor actuele kunst: Henk Visch in de garageruimte, Kurt Ryslavy in de tuinkamer en Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Anne Daems, Rinus Van de Velde en Vaast Colson in het het poortgebouw van het voormalig Militair Hospitaal aan de overkant van de straat, dat tijdelijk werd gehuurd. Aan de kunstenaars werd gevraagd om een presentatie te realiseren in de geest van hun eigen artistiek oeuvre. De titel van de tentoonstelling is ontleend aan een tekening van Rinus Van de Velde uit 2009. Een tekst van auteur Koen Sels zal het tentoonstellingsproject omkaderen.

Belgium has a rich tradition of collecting contemporary art, which has led various arts organizations in the country to regularly offer a platform for private collections. Next to that, it has generated discussions of diverse questions, such as: What motivates collectors to include particular works in their collections? What guidelines do they follow when they buy art? Do such guidelines actually exist, or do collectors act more spontaneously than we suppose? Is it the intention to make the private collection accessible to the public temporarily or permanently? How does the private collection relate to the art market and to public collections?
Artists themselves also collect art, however. Their way of collecting can take on several forms: they exchange or buy, collect work that is widely different or actually fairly akin to their own… Some interesting questions in relation to artist’s collections are: Do they collect strategically or spontaneously? And how does their art collection relate to their own oeuvre? Might this relationship tell us something about an artist’s thinking? Six artists were invited to present their own collections in LLS 387, ruimte voor actuele kunst: Henk Visch in the garage space, Kurt Ryslavy in the garden room and Koenraad Dedobbeleer, Anne Daems, Rinus Van de Velde and Vaast Colson in the gatehouse of the former Military Hospital across the road, which was made avaible for the occasion. The artists were asked to create a presentation in the spirit of their own artistic oeuvre. The exhibition’s title is taken from a drawing by Rinus Van de Velde from 2009. A text by author Koen Sels will put the exhibition project in context.
